GREAT PERSONALITIES

Lalu Prasad Yadav
Born in a non-political family and in a backward caste, Lalu Prasad became one of the youngest members of Parliament in 1977, at the age of 29. Lalu became the chief minister of Bihar for the first time in 1990 and remained in power till 1997. In the wake of the "fodder scam", Lalu Prasad resigned as CM of Bihar and installed his wife, Rabri Devi, as the new CM. Thus Lalu, a student politician and a product of the "JP movement", which fought against the dynastic rule, is criticized for promoting and perpetuating family rule and giving rise to a phenomenon of the "surrogate chief ministership". In 1997, Lalu broke away from the Janata Dal and formed his own party - Rashtriya Janata Dal. Lalu Prasad was railway minister from 2004 to 2009 during the first UPA government. As railway minister, he is credited with bringing a
turnaround in the fortunes of the Indian Railways. Lalu's tenure as railway minister has been studied by IIMs, Harvard, Wharton and, of late, has become a matter of contestation. For better or worse, the style and mannerism of Lalu has been aped and mimicked by film and TV stars and is responsible for the popularization of a "Bihari culture" in the entertainment industry. Currently, an MP from Saran constituency in Bihar, Lalu is spending his time in wilderness and working to make himself politically relevant again
